Patient and Public Engagement in Practice Based Commissioning

South Staffordshire Primary Care Trust is committed to ensuring effective and appropriate engagement with all of its target audiences when planning and developing new services or reviewing existing ones. These include:

  • Patients, carers and their families
  • Staff
  • Voluntary and community sector
  • Neighbouring NHS trusts
  • Partner organisations
  • Wider community

As commissioners, the GP practices are also acting on behalf of the public and their patients and as such are responsible for investing funds on behalf of their communities to provide the care that they need.

In order to make commissioning decisions that reflect the needs, priorities and aspirations of the local population the Primary Care Trust and the GP practices must engage with the public and actively seek the views of patients, carers and the wider community.

In doing so, the GP practices and the Primary Care Trust aim to create local health services that mirror what patients need, build on their trust and confidence and to generally improve the health and well-being of local residents.

To find out more about the role of patient and public engagement in Practice Based Commissioning, please see the leaflet - Working with you in the NHS - Practice Based Commissioning and the role of patient and public engagement pdf (259k).
