Practice Based Commissioning in South Staffordshire
What is Practice Based Commissioning?
Practice Based Commissioning is a Government policy, which largely devolves responsibility for commissioning local health services from Primary Care Trusts to local GP practices.
Under Practice Based Commissioning, GP practices or groups of practices have the right to receive a budget from the Primary Care Trust to purchase health care for their registered patients and become more involved in commissioning decisions. This involves:
- Identifying patient needs
- Designing effective and appropriate health service responses to those needs
- Allocating resources against competing service priorities
