This is an exciting time for Public Health in South Staffordshire. The Government's White Paper, 'Choosing Health' (2004), set out key principles to help and support us to make more informed and healthier choices about our health.
Many of us are now living longer and healthier lives but this is not necessarily the case for all of us - there are considerable differences in health between those at the top and those at the bottom of the social scale. In South Staffordshire over 48,000 of us live in the some of the most deprived communities in the UK. Higher income can make health choices easier but better education can help all of us to understand the risks associated with poor health and to stay healthy.
South Staffordshire Primary Care Trust (PCT) understands the importance of addressing these inequalities in health. We aim to create a society where more of us, particularly those of us who are disadvantaged in some way, have the confidence to make lifestyle choices to help us to live longer but also healthier and happier.
The number of elderly people, here in South Staffordshire is expected to increase more than many other areas in England. As well as providing support to those of us who are already older we need to help the many thousands of us who are now in our forties, fifties or sixties in particular, to understand the importance of making lifestyle choices now to help prevent the onset of long-term conditions in the future.
The PCT is working hard to protect and improve your health by helping you to:
This ‘Your Health’ web page will give you help and advice in each of these areas as well as relevant links to local services and some more specialist websites. There is also a section called ‘Public Health Intelligence’ which gives information about our population as well as intelligence about what we die from, the diseases we suffer from along with the lifestyle differences that so intrinsically affect our health and well-being.
Any comments on the content and ease of use of this web page are most welcome. Please contact us at PublicHealthIntelligence@southstaffspct.nhs.uk.
Below is a range of reports that have been produced to help us understand the health of our population:
