Controlled Drugs

The Controlled Drugs (Supervision of Management and Use) Regulations 2006, resulted from the Shipman Inquiry in response to the need to strengthen the governance arrangements around controlled drugs.

PCTs are required to appoint an Accountable Officer for controlled drugs who is responsible for ensuring that the management and control arrangements for controlled drugs are robust.

The NPC - A guide to good practice in the management of controlled drugs in primary care ( England) pdf (447k) gives a valuable summary of the various legal requirements as well as good practice elements of prescribing and managing controlled drugs.
