Joint Strategic Needs Assessment

This area of 'Your Health' will be of particular interest to primary care trusts, local authorities, the County Council and other partner organisations in Staffordshire but may also provide useful information to students and members of the general public.

Joint Strategic Needs Assessments (JSNA) underpin key national strategies such as Our Health Our Care Our Say (2006) and the Commissioning Framework for Health and Well-being (2007). The main goal of these is to shift services away from the treatment of patients when they are ill to a proactive model of prevention that maintains health and well being among individuals and communities.

Key steps to achieving this are through the commissioning of services that are built around need and outcomes, consultation, accessibility, and good quality, timely demographic data about the local population. The purpose of a Joint Strategic Needs Assessment is to provide a multi-agency view of 'need’. It identifies 'the big picture' relating to the health and wellbeing needs and inequalities of the local population now and in the future.

The Local Government and Public Involvement in Health Act 2007 requires primary care trusts and local authorities to undertake joint strategic needs assessments. The first of these, the 'Health and Social Profile of Staffordshire (Adults), was completed and published earlier in 2008. The JSNA for children and young people was also completed and made available in 2008. These two reports have since been updated and the last two were published in early 2010. Following their publication a decision was made to no longer separate adults and children. A combined JSNA has now been written and was published in December 2010. The Report provides general reference information for you to use, as appropriate, within your organisation and we hope you will find it useful.

The Report is a large file and we will eventually make it available via the Staffordshire Observatory’s Local Information System but for now it is available as a pdf file to download (see below). Be aware though that it may take a few minutes to download. If you experience difficulties when trying to download the reports please contact us on the link below.

Feedback
This is very much a 'live' document. There will be gaps and we would appreciate any reference to additional data and information that we could include. We intend to update the document annually. Please do email the link below to give us your views on the Report as it stands with particular reference to different information that could be added but views about anything else are also most welcome.
