Patient Choice and Choose and Book

What is Patient Choice?

From 1 April 2008, the majority of patients being referred to hospital will be able to choose where they wish to be treated across the country.

Does this apply to all services?

There may be clinical reasons for limiting the range of choices that are available to patients and there are some services that fall outside the scope of the choice policy. This could be where speed of access is particularly important, for example, patients attending a rapid access chest pain clinic or patients attending cancer services. Maternity and mental health services are also currently exempt.

Can I still be referred to my local hospital?

Yes, patients may still choose to go to their local hospital.

How will I be referred?

The easiest way to be referred is via a computer system called Choose and Book. This is a secure system, designed to give your GP all of the information needed to refer you to a hospital suitable for your needs.

What are the benefits for me if the GP uses Choose and Book?

You experience greater convenience and certainty. You can choose your own date and time for your appointment.

How does Choose and Book work?

When you and your GP agree that you need an appointment with a consultant, Choose and Book shows your GP which hospitals or clinics are available for your treatment. Your GP discusses with you the appropriate options which are available for treating your medical condition.

If you know where and when you would like to be seen, you may be able to book your appointment before you leave the surgery. You will be given confirmation of the place, date and time of your appointment.

You may want more time to consider your choices. If so, you can take an appointment request letter away with you and book your appointment later through the Choose and Book Appointment Line who will also help you make an informed choice of hospital.

What information is there available to help me make my choice?

Your GP Practice will have copies of “Choosing your Hospital Booklets” and “An Introduction to Choose and Book”. Please ask for your copy if you have not been given one with your referral details.

You can also get information by calling the Appointments line on 0845 608 888
