Prepare to Stop

Why did you start smoking?

Now you’re planning to stop, its worth thinking about what got you started. Do any of these sound familiar?

  • To feel grown up
  • To be tough
  • To be accepted
  • Curiosity
  • Just felt like it
  • Anything else?

Which of these still apply? Are they good reasons to keep smoking?

What's keeping you smoking?

Smoking is usually a habit. There are probably certain times in the day that you normally light up (triggers). Its good to know what these are and have a way of dealing with them.

When are you most likely to want to smoke?

  • Waking up
  • Walking on the phone
  • Having a drink/ at social events
  • Watching TV
  • After a meal

Why go smokefree?

List your reasons to smoke and then your reasons to go smokefree. If the reasons to go smokefree are stronger than the reasons to smoke you are ready to. If not you’re not ready to stop.

What triggers you to smoke?

If you are unsure about your triggers to smoke pick a usual working day and a different day (weekend) fill out the diary pdf (15k) writing down each cigarette you have. This will help you to understand when is going to be a difficult time to stop and what is triggering you to smoke.

Manage your triggers

Here are some ways of coping with difficult moments:-

  • Stay busy
  • Think about something else
